MIT Media Lab's ReDx camp with Prof Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool
Introduction
WeSchool had associated with national and international design and innovation institution of repute to ideate and formulate path-breaking ideas in the field of technology, education, healthcare, renewable energy, etc. In the past, WeSchool has associated with MIT Media Lab, Harvard Business School, Stanford University, IDEO, etc. with the guidance from Prof Dr. Uday Salunkhe.
Healthcare in India is a big concern from quality, accessibility and affordability point of view. Taking cognisance of the same, WeSchool had associated with MIT Media Lab to brainstorm, ideate and showcase innovation in the field of healthcare diagnostic technology.
The ‘ReDx-Redesigning Diagnostics’ presented by the Camera Culture Group, MIT Media Lab, USA with IIT-B, Hinduja National Hospital and WeSchool successfully concluded in an ‘Open House’ at WeSchool campus in Mumbai in the presence of Shri. Vinod Tawde, Hon. Minister for Education & Culture, Govt. of Maharashtra, Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe and other dignitaries.
ReDx:
A group of 16 students across diverse programs like General Management, Business Design, Ebiz and Healthcare from WeSchool had participated In ReDx under the mentorship of world renowned Innovator Prof Ramesh Raskar and his colleagues, Anshuman Das and John Werner, Camera Culture Group, MIT Media Lab, along with expert faculty from IIT-B, Hinduja Hospital and WeSchool.
Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool said “The collaboration between MIT Media lab and WeSchool is a milestone in our journey towards creating the future. During ReDx, WeSchool students have helped translate potentially high impact ideas/solutions sourced from health researchers & doctors and turned these challenges not only into working prototypes but also into executable business solutions.”
Shri. Vinod Tawde, Hon. Minster for Education & Culture, said “WeSchool and MIT have made a wonderful beginning, now the government must step in to take it forward. We will certainly facilitate such projects which will help create accessible and affordable healthcare solutions for the common people.”
Prof. Ramesh Raskar, Associate Professor, MIT Media Lab said, “ReDx, a platform focused on Healthcare challenges, is a joint venture going on in parallel in USA and India.”
At the grand finale of ReDx Go-to-market prototypes were showcased:
- Stethocardiogram - A low-cost, handheld screening device for valvular heart disease
- Low Cost X- Ray Machine
- Vein Detection using Augmented Reality & Oxymetric mapping
- Anterior Segment Ocular Imaging
- iLABLEit for Retinal Imaging Annotation
- DAAnt – An automated devise for early detection and continuous monitoring of dental health
- Otoscope for visualizing ears
- Cardio24 - An integrated platform that enables automated diagnosis of cardiac health
- Super Stereo – A low cost wearable modular platform for eye diagnosis
- Skinspect- A handheld device that uses spectroscopy to detect skin-lesions
- Hydrospect- Modifying a pulse oximeter to be able to quantify & access hydration monitor
- MIT Smart Toilet Initiative- Personalized health bioanalytics at home
- Sleep Apnea for Rest Analysis and Monitoring
- Skin perfusion Photography – Analyzing wounds, burns & other skin conditions using blood flow perfusion maps
Dr. Uday Salunkhe said that out of these convenient, affordable, do-it-yourself devices, the most promising projects will be selected for continuing development with the goal of commercialization in the coming year.
International conference/ seminars attended
• Dr. Uday Salunkhe attended the International Seminar - Citynet conference organized by Yokohama City University at Japan in September 2009
• The 10th South Asian Management Forum-Change and Continuity : Management Change & Prospects in Bhutan was attended by Dr. Uday Salunkhe in April 2009
• He attended a Sheriff delegation at Atlanta, USA in 2008 and visited the U.S.A. as a Member of Sheriff of Mumbai’s Delegation to observe best practices followed by the Universities and Institutions of Higher Education in U.S.A. and for exchange of academic ideas in October 2008
• Standford D school attended the “Design/Management Europe Design: The Linking Force” in April 2008
• Dr. Uday Salunkhe was in Sweden for an internship at the Malardalen University in March 2008
• ICICI Bank Conclave in Singapore in February 2007 was also attended by Dr. Uday Salunkhe
• Visit to Stanford D School, Harvard Business School, MIT and UC Berkley in the USA was on the cards for Dr. day Salunkhe to understand the trend in Management Schools across the globe in April 2007
• The 9th South Asian Management Forum in Dhaka, Bangladesh was attended by Dr. Uday Salunkhe August 2006
